Thick, high-purity silicon carbide (SiC) layers, typically exceeding 1mm, are critical components in various high-value applications, including semiconductor fabrication and aerospace technologies. This article delves into the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process for producing such layers, highlighting key process parameters, material characteristics, and emerging applications.

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) as an "ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor" material has garnered sustained attention. Ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors fall under the category of "fourth-generation semiconductors," and in comparison to third-generation semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), gallium oxide boasts a bandgap width of 4.9eV, surpassing silicon carbide's 3.2eV and gallium nitride's 3.39eV. A wider bandgap implies that electrons require more energy to transition from the valence band to the conduction band, endowing gallium oxide with characteristics like high voltage resistance, high-temperature tolerance, high power capability, and radiation resistance.

The application areas of SiC-based and Si-based GaN are not strictly separated. In GaN-On-SiC devices, the cost of SiC substrate is relatively high, and with the growing maturity of SiC long crystal technology, the cost of the device is expected to fall further, and it is used in power devices in the field of power electronics.

As a third-generation semiconductor material, Gallium Nitride is often compared with Silicon Carbide. Gallium Nitride still demonstrates its superiority with its large bandgap, high breakdown voltage, high thermal conductivity, high saturated electron drift velocity and strong radiation resistance. But it is undeniable that, like Silicon Carbide, Gallium Nitride also has various technical difficulties.
