Solar photovoltaic (PV) generation saw a record increase of 270 TWh (26%) in 2022, reaching almost 1300 TWh. This is the largest absolute growth rate of all renewable energy sources in 2022 and has surpassed wind power for the first time in history. The growth rate for PV generation matches the level predicted for the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 scenario from 2023 to 2030. The economic attractiveness of PV is continuously increasing, leading to massive development in the supply chain and increasing policy support, particularly in China, the United States, the European Union, and India. As a result, it is expected that capacity growth will accelerate in the coming years.
The market for solar photovoltaic is mainly dominated by the use of crystalline silicon technology. Most of the processes involved in the photovoltaic value chain operate at high temperatures and in extremely corrosive environments, such as polysilicon production, silicon crystal pulling, and PECVD reactor. This makes it essential to use materials that can withstand such harsh conditions while maintaining high purity and precision to produce solar silicon grades that meet the industry's tight specifications. Our materials play an indispensable role in fulfilling these requirements for the photovoltaic industry.
Solutions for processes in PV value chain
1. Polysilicon production
There are three primary technologies used to produce polysilicon. The 'modified Siemens process' is currently the most commonly used technology in China. To create Trichlorosilane (TCS), two metallurgical-grade silicon pieces (with a purity of 95-99%) and liquid chlorine are used. After distillation purification, the TCS is vaporized and mixed with hydrogen gas. In a deposition reactor, silicon slim rods are heated up to 1,100°C, and upon the gas mixture's passing, high-purity silicon is deposited on the rods' surface. This process continues until a specific diameter (typically 150-200mm) is achieved. UMG utilizes physical methods to extract impurities directly from the silicon metal rather than chemical procedures.
