Nearly $840 Million: Onsemi Acquires a SiC Company

Today, Onsemi announced on its official website that it has reached an agreement with Qorvo to acquire the SiC JFET technology business and Qorvo's subsidiary, United Silicon Carbide, for $115 million in cash (approximately 834 million RMB). Onsemi expects that this acquisition will expand the company's market opportunities by $1.3 billion (approximately 9.4 billion RMB) within the next five years. How does Onsemi view this acquisition? They believe it will complement Onsemi's extensive EliteSiC power product portfolio, enabling the company to address the high efficiency and power density demands of power units in artificial intelligence data centers during the AC-DC stage. Furthermore, this move will accelerate Onsemi's readiness for emerging markets, such as electric vehicle battery circuit breakers and Solid State Circuit Breakers (SSCBs). Onsemi stated that the transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.

What about Qorvo?

Qorvo, short for Qorvo, Inc., is also known as Qorvo United Semiconductors, Inc. Established in 2015 and headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, it was formed by the merger of RF Micro Devices, Inc. and TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. One of the world's largest RF semiconductor manufacturers, Qorvo reported total revenue of $3.8 billion for the fiscal year 2024 (ending March 31, 2024). They include ACG (Advanced Cellular Group, Advanced Cellular Division), CSG (Connectivity Sensors Group, Connectivity Sensors Division), and HPA (High Performance Analog, High Performance Analog Division), with main products such as gallium arsenide amplifiers, bulk acoustic wave filters, and temperature-compensated surface acoustic wave filters. Qorvo is the result of the merger of two RF giants and, although it still holds a significant market share in the RF sector, in recent years, the company has also been entering more markets through acquisitions, such as analog power, motor control, SiC, and it seems to be developing well.

What about UnitedSiC?

UnitedSiC, established in 1999, primarily deploys SiC transistor and diode solutions for high-efficiency power conversion applications. In November 2021, Qorvo acquired UnitedSiC with the aim of incorporating its SiC FET, JFET, and Schottky diode device technologies to further expand its product portfolio and enhance its influence in fields such as electric vehicles.
